Rene Magritte
Rene Magritte was a Belgian surrealist artist who was especially well known for a number of witty and thought-provoking images. He also shows that depicting ordinary objects in an unusual context, including showing himself within his paintings. At a very early age in Magritte's life, his mother committed suicide in the River Sambre, this wasn't the first time she has tried to end her life. This links with his paintings because he was witnessed to have saw his mother's body being dragged out of the water. Supposedly, when his mother's body was found, her dress was covering her face which could link towards the painting, 'Les Amants'-'The Lovers'. The lovers also links with my recent photographer, Laura Williams. They link together because of the fabric on the heads which shows an unknown figure.
High Society, 1962
The figure that is filled in is the shadow of the artist, Rene Magritte. The depth of field is shown as a very short snapshot as the main aspect of the photograph you can see is the figure and the detail in the clouds and the sea. The focus in the photograph shows off to the viewers that the main focus wants to be on the detail in the painting and the focus on what everything in the painting signifies. Many of Rene Magritte's have the same link between the clouds and the figures. This is eye-opening towards the viewers because they start to wonder if Magritte is trying to illustrate something towards the viewers. Also, the body is mostly full with the paintings of the clouds which are above the paintings of the sea. In most of Magritte's work, the colours include white and blue. Also, Magritte always includes a painting of the sky and the landscape which has to include the colour blue. However, the colour blue in the paintings are a similar shade of blue, either light or dark. The fabric on the left figure is a opposite towards the rest of his painitngs because it looks darker than the rest of the colours used. The two figures can be related to each other by nature and popular landscapes such as the beach and forestry. Magritte's photography could highlight the idea of soulesness as you can see through the bodies of the subjects which could interpret the fact he's empty inside.
This image was made on photoshop in the style of Rene Magritte. At the start of the process, I took photographs of some plants and the sky so it looks similar to the patterns in the person shape in Magritte's artwork. I cut around the person to make the person in the shape of the sky. I then pasted this onto a spare layer which then was added onto a person that was cut out of grass. I then coloured the background purple to make it link with Rene Magritte's photographs. The final piece on Photoshop looks very similar to Rene Magritte's work because of the link of colours and main subjects within the photograph. I like Magritte's work as it makes you see everyday life in a different aspect such as the sky and human life. Also, I like that all his artwork is linked by the common use of the clouds and the blue sky.
